Hawaii is on the top of the list when it comes to my favorite getaways. It doesn’t get much better than warm beaches, sun, and mai tais. Unless you have a grandpa (Paw Paw) that lives on the Big Island and your sister and brother-in-law are going to meet you and your husband there. Then it is so much better!
Hawaii is wonderful but the experience is made much more special if you get to share it with family and friends.
Our mornings began with listening for the familiar tail slap of the migrating mother whales and their calves. It was late in the migration season but we still saw dozens of late travellers. These were such wonderful moments to witness as the mother taught the baby how to breach and lobtail.
Each day was pretty similar. Up with the sun. Lounge about in the cool morning air and then prep for the sun. We lathered ourselves in sunscreen. Dug around for sunglasses. Threw towels in the beach bag and gathered food for the day. We sought out different snorkel locations every day but all were filled with beautiful fish and golden sand.
Our first snorkel day was actually cut short by a shark sighting. It wasn’t at our beach but it was making it’s way towards our snorkel location so no more floundering in the water for us that day.
The standard mai tai on the beach happened as well as my Paw Paw’s signature mai tai on his lanai. A trip to Hawaii is not complete until you’ve enjoyed a mai tai in the warm caressing air.
The last couple of days on the island were packed with adventures. We took a morning helicopter ride out of Hilo. It was one of those rare clear days in Hilo so the views were fantastic. We spotted lush waterfalls and then our views were quickly filled with majestic volcanoes. After observing the beauty from the sky we took to the ground and hiked for the rest of the day. I believe this was my favorite day of the whole trip. Together we got to experience the beauty of Hawaii. It’s those moments that make travel special and well worth every penny.
It was hard to leave but not because I wanted to stay and sit on the beach. I didn’t want to miss out on precious time with my family. It is not easy to get us together but when we finally do make it I never want to say goodbye. Thankfully, there is another trip planned this year. We will all meet on the other side of the world to spend a couple weeks together. I look forward to the conversation and quiet moments of just being with my loved ones.
