There are some days when all I want to do is eat a large pile of french toast with powdered sugar and syrup, a couple of Costco cinnamon rolls, maybe a Milky Way candy bar, and I'd finish off the day with any kind of sour candy.
You could say I have a problem with sugar - and you would be right. I struggle with sugar cravings. I wanted to write this because I know I am not the only one. I know we all have the tendency to lose our minds as we search for that old candy that we are sure we saw in the pantry 6 months ago.
It is no surprise that sugar has been proven to be an addictive substance (here is one of many studies). Should we be consuming something that creates a battle of self-control versus gallon of ice cream?
We know sugar is not good for us but that doesn’t mean it is easy to kick the habit.

Do you identify with any of the above? I know I sure do. I have faced all of those triggers. I still face a few of them but there is hope for us all!
Following are a few tips for how we can address sugar cravings and not succumb to eating 3 pieces of chocolate cake in 10 minutes, or having 4 sugar-laden cocktails at the bar after a long day at work.

Not all sugar is bad. What you really want to avoid is all refined sugar and please please please don’t think artificial sweeteners are a good alternative. If you are avoiding refined sugars and instead consuming artificial sweeteners please read this article.
What treats should you reach for when you need to quell the vicious sugar beast in your brain?
These should all be consumed in moderation. Just because they are much closer to their original state and have health benefits doesn’t mean you should eat them in large quantities.
Have a serving size and take the time to enjoy it.
I encourage you to put in the effort to reduce or completely eliminate processed sugar. There is nothing good about it. Challenge yourself for 3 days. Can you avoid all refined sugar for 3 days? You won’t know until you give it a go!
Remember, balance is key but there are some things that don’t belong in your body.
